What do we do?

After you have spoken to the funeral home, the minister will meet with some of the family and/or close friends in the few days before the service. This takes place at a time and place that is convenient for you, often at your home.

There are various options that you may have already decided upon:
- a funeral service with a committal following at the cemetery, or
- a funeral service with a cremation following at the cemetery, or
- a funeral service following cremation with a committal as well, or
- a memorial service without ashes or body

As well, committals can be immediately after the service, or at a later date.
There is no one way to do this; it is a question of personal choice and family wishes.
The minister can come to the funeral home for a service, or the service can take place in one of our two
churches.

What is the difference between the two churches?

We have two churches. One is Wyman Memorial United Church at 513 Main Road, Hudson, Qc. The second is the Cote St. Charles United Church, just off autoroute 40 at 2503 Cote St. Charles, St. Lazare, Qc.
There is seating capacity of 300 in Wyman Church and 65 in the Cote St. Charles Church. The Cote Church is a rural “chapel” and is well suited to smaller gatherings. There is an electric organ for music.
Obviously, the Wyman Church can seat many more people. It also has a pipe organ and piano.
The Cote St. Charles Cemetery is immediately behind the Cote Church.

What is the service like?

The minister will discuss with you the form of your service. You will have the opportunity to have significant input; music, hymns, readings, eulogies etc. to create a service that reflects the life of the individual.

You may choose to be involved in the service, or ask others to be involved. You may ask that the service be in English, French or bilingual; you may add other languages through the participation of family and friends.

We would like a reception after the service

Our church hall in either church is available to you upon request for your reception. There is a rental fee for the hall, unless you are having us provide the refreshements.

We can arrange for refreshments appropriate to the time of day or you can arrange this yourself, or with a caterer. If you ask for us to provide the refreshments, the cost is $6.00 per person expected for light refreshments.

How much does it cost?

There is no set fee for the minister. Those who choose to do so may give an honorarium – this might be between $150.00 to $175.00. At the same time, donations for the church or for the choir are always welcome.

There is a set fee structure for the organist, as laid out below. Our organist is a respected professional musician and makes some of her livelihood from her tenure at our church and therefore we request that her basic payment be honoured, even if you should choose another musician for your service. Please feel free to consult her directly concerning the music and the payment of fees, which are payable the day of the service or beforehand. For the sake of mutual convenience you may also leave the organist’s payment with the minister or at the church office.

- ORGANIST’S FEE: $160.00
- ORGANIST WITH CHOIR: $240.00
- ORGANIST WITH SOLOIST: $205.00

After-Care

After the service the minister is still available to you for pastoral care. Grief can be a long process and at times can be a difficult burden. Anyone can call the minister for follow-up care.

As well, each year we have a “Blue Christmas Service” or “Longest Night Service.” This service, held around the 21st or 22nd of December, is a meaningful time for those who have experienced loss or other stresses in their lives. It is a Christmas service, but one that is designed to reflect and quietly speak to those who live in difficult times.

Check the Announcements section or call the office for our schedules. As well, we hope that our regular Sunday services might also be of support to you.
