How do we go about having a baptism?

The path depends on the age of the individual. In the case of an infant, the minister will meet with the parent(s) for about an hour sometime in the weeks preceding the baptism. When practical, it is great if godparents can be included in this meeting, if you are choosing to have godparents.

This meeting often takes place in parents’ home, at a time that is convenient with work and other schedules. We also ask that you attend a regular church service at least once before the baptism of your child. In the case of a youth or adult, we offer preparation classes, as baptism then takes the place of baptism and confirmation. This a 10 hour preparation.

Who can be baptized?

In the case of children and infants, anyone can be baptized if someone, usually the parents, feel that they can take, with integrity, the vows in the service. In the case of a youth or adult, they will take these vows themselves.

What vows do we take?

In the vows, one states one’s belief in God and in Jesus, and states one’s commit-ment to living a Christian life and staying in fellowship with the Church.

What if we are not from a United Church?

Your denomination of origin is not important. We are ready to welcome you and we are happy to share our faith tradition with you.

Can we have a private ceremony?

One significant part of the meaning of baptism is becoming a part of the family of Christ, which is the Church. Thus we celebrate baptism in the midst of the family: during regular public worship

When can we celebrate the baptism of our child?

Our regular services are on Sunday mornings at 10:30am (Wyman) or, in July and August, at 10:00am (The Cote).

We do not have particular Sundays set aside for baptism. However, there may be some weeks when there is already a lot happening in our regular worship, such that it is not practical to add the celebration of baptism. The minister or the secretary will be able to inform you of available dates.

What is the service like?

The United Church style of worship is relaxed and welcoming. Worship at Wyman is marked by excellent music.

The baptism is usually, but not always, near the beginning of the service. For your convenience, or that of your guests, there is a nursery on the same level as the Sanctuary. As well, there is a rocking chair at the back of the Sanctuary. You may choose to nurse during the service.

Services are approximately one hour long.

How much does it cost?

We do not charge for baptism. Donations to the Church are always welcome, as the church exists and serves because people give donations.

Will our child be the only one?

When you book a date, the minister can tell you if another baptism is already planned for the same day. However, there will be no guarantee that there will not be another child booked after yours. We cannot hold dates exclusively for one child because of the number of requests that we have. When there is more than one baptism, the two families (we do try to avoid more than two families at a time) stand at the same time, one on each side of the font. When there is more than one child, the service preferences of both families will be considered in a balanced fashion.

What about godparents?

Some parents like to have godparents for their children. The United Church has no requirements: you can have none, or you can have one, two, or more. There are also no particular requirements for a balance, male and female. If you choose to have godparents, it is desirable, as mentioned earlier, that they be present for the preparation meeting.
